This dissertation centers on painting and other related pictorial art produced in the first capital of the Ming dynasty, Yingtian (later known as Nanjing), from the founding of the dynasty in 1368 to 1421, when the capital was relocated to the northern city of Beijing. The five chapters address the following interwoven themes: the re-emergence of the city of Yingtian as a leading cultural center after several centuries of supporting roles; the encounters, collaborations, and competition between different regional artistic traditions in the new Ming capital; and the new Ming court's complex pursuit of identity and legitimacy through their patronage of pictorial arts. The initial stage of the Ming dynasty from 1368 to 1421 is one of the least well studied periods in Chinese art history. This dissertation confronts this lack and its many inherent challenges (lack of extant works by recorded artists, for example). With its special focus on the first Ming capital, the project aims to investigate how a particular "space-time-people ensemble" shaped painting and pictorial art production during those uncertain decades. In answering this question, the dissertation also sheds new light on the trans-dynastic period of the late-Yuan and very early Ming period, approximately 1350-1421.
