Purpose. The purpose of this study was to answer four questions concerning two aspects of the morale of special education teachers at the junior high school level in the Republic of China. The two aspects were: (1) to compare the morale of special education teachers, as a total sample or when grouped by four teaching areas, and regular education teachers, respectively; and (2) to compare the morale of special education teachers analyzed according to service delivery alternatives as well as four teaching areas in which they were involved. Procedures. Through stratified random sampling procedures, 120 special and 120 regular education teachers from 23 local administrative districts were included in the study. The Purdue Teacher Opinionaire was translated into Chinese and employed as an instrument to measure teacher morale. All participants, or 100%, returned the instruments. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, analysis of variance, and Scheffe's test. The .05 level of significance was set for all statistical analyses. Findings. (1) No statistically significant differences in overall morale were found between: (a) regular teachers and total special teachers; (b) regular teachers and teachers of the visually handicapped (VH teachers); (c) regular teachers and teachers of the physically handicapped (PH teachers); and (d) regular teachers and teachers of the mentally retarded (MR teachers). (2) Significant differences in overall morale were found between or among: (a) regular teachers and teachers of the hearing impaired (HI teachers); (b) VH teachers, HI teachers, PH teachers, and MR teachers; and (c) itinerant, special class, and residential school teachers. Conclusions. Based on the findings, these conclusions were presented: (1) the morale levels of total special teachers are currently more like regular teachers than different from them; (2) both regular teachers and VH teachers have significantly higher morale than HI teachers; and (3) itinerant teachers have significantly higher morale than residential school teachers. Implications and Recommendations. Administrators and principals should initiate efforts to increase the morale of teachers of the hearing impaired and all residential schools' teachers.
