Using a modification of Talcott Parsons' general social systems theory and theories of social conflict and socio-cultural change, this study ascertains, analyzes and determines the future trends of educational opportunities for women in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong. Data for the study were collected by documentary research and semi-structured oral history interviews with fifty-five informants in Hong Kong. The study reveals that participation of females in education in Hong Kong is equal to that of the males' except in higher education. There is an overall lack of involvement in technical and science subjects by female students. There is also an absence of consciousness of the sexual inequality in higher education. Most parents are favorable toward educating their daughters, although female students reveal that their aspiration is lower than that of the males'. The low participation of females in technical subjects is perceived as natural. No specific goals of education for women have been contemplated by the school system, except for instances in which some educators include the cultivation of female virtues as a goal of education. With the availability of nine years of free education since 1978, a more child-centered approach in education is adopted by the Education Department. Future educational planning emphasizes the expansion of technical education. Career guidance is not yet an important part of education. Many career teachers do not have the proper training to provide professional counseling. For every three gainfully employed males with matriculation education, there is only one female. Females' qualification is lower than males' even in their favorite career fields. There is an absence of female executives in the business sector, although professional women outnumber men in the social service sector. University education significantly improves women's career level and salary. Factors affecting women's career opportunities include employers' values, physical capability of females, ambition, marriage performance, and qualification. No tension for change is identified regarding women's education and their integration into the society. Further studies on education for women in Hong Kong are recommended. The main issue of women's education centers on the role conflicts they are confronted with in today's society.
