This dissertation describes the theoretical investigation of a hierarchical system for Chinese orthography. Our purpose is to develop a foundation to systematically study Chinese characters. Specifically, we desire to establish a new methodology for working with a large body of Chinese characters, say of tens of thousands of characters. In this research, the techniques of hierarchical analysis and synthesis are introduced to explore the deep structures of Chinese characters. These, together with a series of cognitive psychology experiments, have led to the instructional design of a new teaching method. A central purpose of this research is not merely to develop a system of characters for its own sake, but has the extended goal of applying the research findings to education. In so doing, millions of Chinese children may benefit from it directly, as well as those Western adults who seek to learn Chinese language and culture. An equally important goal is computer applications, such as applying this hierarchical knowledge for designing an efficient code for the input/output systems of a micro-computer where memory limitations exist, for a Chinese word-processor, or a video teaching machine.
