In this century, Mandarin, thought to have derived from a primarily monosyllabic language, has experienced an increase in its inventory of disyllabic words through compounding and affixation. This increase may have begun as a way to counteract possible homophony in nouns. However, the association of the innovative disyllabicity and nounhood has wider consequences: the added phonetic weight of a disyllabic word may induce a nounward shift of valence for verbs. Although the degree of its spread in spoken and written Chinese varies, disyllabism, combined with a shift from paratactic to hypotactic clausal conjunction and a trend toward verb final sentence structure contributes to a nouny alternative in the language. This work will examine a number of phenomena which suggest that post-1949 Mandarin Chinese allows increasing use of deverbal nominals and that the traditional strict categorization of words into verbs, adjectives and nouns should be modified. This evaluation relies on distributional analysis. A list of measures is introduced to determine the nominal behavior of verbs and adjectives. Without undermining word classes, or giving up the noun/(adjective)/verb division, it is argued that the concept of non-discrete variations should be included in an account of the grammar.
