This dissertation studies Chinese phrase structures within the extended X'-theory, which postulates that both lexical and functional categories may head their own projections. For this purpose, the following issues are considered: which functional categories may project to phrasal categories in Chinese?; how may Chinese sentences and noun phrases be represented under the extended X'-theory?; how may the extension of X'-theory to functional categories be drawn upon to account for some Chinese word order facts?; and what are the roles of Huang's (1982) X'-structure Constraint, Travis' (1984) C-role requirements, Li's (1985) case requirements and Larson's (1988b) principle of argument realization under the application of the extended X'-theory to Chinese? Following Bowers (1988, 1989) and Abney (1987), we assume that functional categories like Pr(edicate) and D(eterminer) may be needed with the SPEC and complement position. We also suggest that Chinese may have a functional category Cl(assifier), which contains numerals and classifiers. With the postulations of Pr, D and Cl, together with a nominal counterpart of CP (i.e. "KP"), the Chinese sentence and noun phrase may be represented as CP-IP-PrP-VP and KP-DP-CIP-NP, respectively. The notion "C-role" is posited in Chinese so as to capture the selection relation between heads and complements, for both lexical and functional categories. We propose further that the head-initial behavior of lexical and functional categories in Chinese may be captured by a directionality requirement on C-role assignment at D-S under a sisterhood condition. Given the assumed extended X'-theory in Chinese, a theory of adjunct licensing is postulated, under which the distribution of adjuncts is dependent on the possible domains of modification of adjuncts. This licensing theory indicates that, contrary to Larson's claim, not all adjuncts may occur as innermost arguments of verbs. These two theories coupled with other principles of universal and particular grammar also suggest that the X'-structure Constraint may be derived; the directionality requirement on C-role assignment may have no bearing on Chinese word order facts; and case assignment does not determine the possibility of postverbal constituents in Chinese.
