Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Stony Brook, 2022.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis explains the lessons my students have taught me throughout my teaching career thus far. I have learned so many lessons from them that have made me a better teacher. Looking back, I have been completely transformed as an educator because of these lessons.1. Graphic novels and verse novels are novels.2. Independent reading novels create readers.3. Student choice goes farther than you realize.4. Authentic writing creates writers.5. Grammar is not the main focus of writing.I have seen the effectiveness of the aforementioned lessons I have adapted into my classroom with thanks to my students. This list is constantly growing every day as I spend more time with my students and learn from them. The field of education is constantly evolving. As educators, we are lifelong learners and are tasked with keeping up with the latest trends and developments in education for the benefit of our students. Our classrooms serve as learning environments not just for the students, but for us as well. In this thesis, I employ both research from experts in the field of education and my own students' thoughts and feelings about these topics.
