Las Vegas is a fantasy city known for its hedonistic culture in themed hotels and casinos. Regarded as kitsch architecture, and combined with a 24/7 gambling atmosphere, these hotels create a hyperreal environment that turns some pleasure-seeking visitors into automated beings lacking in critical thinking and disengaged from real life.Narrative Environments are a form of experiential design that conveys a story through spatial experiences and help users think critically by interacting with the space. Current narrative environments focus on exhibition design, urban design, and brand experiences. This research investigates how narrative environments can be applied to hospitality design, especially in Las Vegas themed hotel main lobbies to induce critical thinking in themed hotel visitors. Because a hotel's main lobby is a space through which visitors pass to other destinations, it gives visitors the first impression of the hotel, and creates a bigger impact on the individual. This qualitative study aimed to,1) identify narrative theories and frameworks from previous literature 2) confirm narrative theories and frameworks in Las Vegas themed hotel main lobbies3) generate Narrative Environment Guidelines to design a themed hotel main lobby The researcher summarized narrative environment evaluation criteria by reviewing three theories from literature; A.J Greimas's Story Dynamics (the content of the story), Gustav Freytag's Story Stages (how the story is laid out), and Christian Mikunda's Spatial Dynamics (how the spatial attributes convey the story). The site survey tool contained the criteria in a question format, with a textbox to explain the observations. As a first-time traveler, the researcher conducted case studies of six Las Vegas themed hotel main lobbies using this tool. In addition, the researcher noted the initial impressions, by using a combination of photos, notes, and mind maps. The researcher also conducted four online interviews with Las Vegas themed hotel personnel. By analyzing the case study observations and interview transcripts, eight Narrative Environment Guidelines were established, which were tested in an adjunct creative component to the research. These verified guidelines will provide ideas for evaluating the level of narrative environments in existing themed hotel main lobbies and provide useful information to hoteliers, designers, educators, and researchers for planning future themed hotel main lobbies that influence visitors to make meaningful conclusions through spatial experiences.
