This thesis presents an analytical study of visual psychological discomfort; using discursive design, "Uncanny Valley," and shock advertising as case studies, to explore the use of psychological discomfort in design.There are times when purely "human-centered" design does not work adequately, so increasing discomfort can become a rhetorically effective solution. However, the level of psychological discomfort is a cliff-like attraction that needs a balanced use.Together with the research of particular design examples, I have explored discomfort design - through the sense of sound, through an exploration of vandalized city textures, and through the collection of objects and feelings that make people uncomfortable. Which led to an understanding of the applications and systematic levels of psychological discomfort designed through a rating system to create awareness of specific themes and to avoid extreme disgust in the audience. Simultaneously with the development of the rating system, this investigation acknowledges that a thorough understanding of the cultural context is essential to comprehend the use of psychological discomfort levels in our design works.
