Thesis (M.I.D.)--Pratt Institute, 2023.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis addresses the critical role of recess in children's holistic development, and the challenges faced by New York City (NYC) elementary schools in providing diverse, enriching play experiences due to budgetary and spatial limitations and insufficient supervision. It introduces "The Game Changer," a playkit designed to ignite creativity and revolutionize the recess experience. The paper is divided into four chapters, which unfold the history and benefits of recess, the design process involving observational research and co-design with children inspired by the cooperative inquiry method, and the development of the Game Changer through multiple iterations based on feedback from children and stakeholders. The final chapter presents the final prototype and playtesting of the prototype, its implementation in real-world settings, and its potential for enriching children's play experiences. The thesis concludes with an acknowledgement to the limitations encountered during research and an exploration of future opportunities, thereby contributing to the field of design and education by offering a practical, co-designed solution that enhances the quality of recess and positively impacts children's development.
