The question of stylistic progression is foundational to the study of Greek art specifically, and of art history in general. Thus far, most scholarship that challenges the traditionally accepted strict linearity of stylistic progression in antiquity primarily addresses examples of retrospective or anachronistic formal choice and does not reflect upon the notion of intentional artistic choice more broadly. I propose the coexistence of what appears to be "future," or prospective, and contemporary styles in a singular sculpture type is indicative of style as choice, rather than being the result of gradual technical improvement. Furthermore, I argue that style as a flexible choice both draws the viewer's attention and directs us towards points of significance for the artist(s) and patron(s). Korai (singular, kore) are standing, clothed, primarily marble, female statues that appear in votive and funerary contexts throughout Greece during the Archaic Period. I present the need for comprehensive reconsideration of the korai's feet and footwear in the context of the stylistic incongruity of the feet and body: while their bodies fall within the stylistic parameters of the Archaic (ca.700-480BCE), their feet more closely resemble of the idealized naturalism associated with the Classical Period (ca.500-323BCE). Understanding the korai's feet/footwear as a deliberate focal point due to the stylistic juxtaposition suggests they are not merely anatomical and decorative, but instead play a significant role in reflecting and representing sociocultural information about a kore's identity or purpose. I employ the question of style as an avenue for looking deeper at the meanings and associations of women's feet/footwear, particularly on whom, when, and in what contexts we observe shod and unshod feet and how and what the Archaic viewer learned and understood about a kore's identity. This dissertation includes the first comprehensive catalog of the feet and footwear of the Attic korai to date.
