George Herbert Mead, of the Chicago School of Sociology, proposed that the ego is composed of two parts: the "I," which represents an individual's motivational tendencies in response to others, and the "me," which represents the social ego and is formed through role-playing and the generalization of others' attitudes towards oneself in social interactions. It is crucial to note that these two components, the subject and object selves, are always closely related and "together they constitute a person who appears in social experience." This proposition, aptly named "social behaviorism", posits that social venues can help people shift social characters, and the more engaged people are in role-playing, the more likely they are to communicate deeply and cross physical and cultural barriers. Research by Keren Mertens Horn has demonstrated that stronger school-community mechanisms can be thought of as response for addressing vulnerable communities. Research has also shown that the performance of schools has a positive impact on the establishment and development of surrounding communities. Therefore, an educational place built on community boundaries can serve as a testing site for crossing community barriers, while a renewed educational model that is aligned with the university education system can guide the planning and layout of educational spaces and strengthen the willingness of those around it to participate. To test this proposition the site needs to be located in an area with an abundance of residents and with demographic variation across neighborhoods and communities. The Sugar Hill building, a mixed using building located in Harlem neighborhood is an ideal site for testing the efficacy of this intervention. It is between the boundaries of the Harlem and Washington Heights districts. This neighborhood has a rich cultural background and migratory history and a great diversity of people. And there is a clear difference in the development of the three districts around it.Research informing potential placemaking within the site includes the work of psychologists Andrew Baum and Stuart Valins mentioned the importance of social place for a space in their book Architecture and Social Behavior. It is the place where social experience is stimulated, and it is the basic element in a space that allows people to make connections, gain and transform identities. Architect Henry Sanoff, founder of the Environmental Design Research Association, also maintained that if people can live in a democratic environment that can make decisions for a space with other people together would make them feel more enthusiastic about the place. And H. G. Waters also said that one of the functions of the public school is to serve the needs of the community to the greatest extent possible with such facilities as it has at its command. Together these considerations lead to the proposition of this paper that a high school would be an ideal program for this site and that it could provide not only basic public functional spaces, but be designed to create opportunities to socialize and collaborate for students and all community stakeholders. Thus, blurring the functional space with different properties could be one of the space strategies to create more encounter opportunities. By creating multiple split levels to expand elevation surfaces and generate accupunctural communication spots is the other space strategy in order to create more possible co-design space for interaction among people with different identities. Characteristics like shape, color, or arrangement help building users make vividly identified mental images of the environment. Creating crossing spots by changing the spatial sequence, furnishings and furniture can be the third strategy to generate unique social spaces for different groups to interact.
