Equity is a burgeoning priority across the architecture discipline. Practitioner resources are coming to market at rapid speed, often citing process-and-policy-oriented pathways for achieving equity in the built environment. A review of equity-focused practitioner resources conducted for this study outlined a gap in guidelines for operationalizing equity through the design of the built environment. The missing design guidance is a departure from the ample guidelines available to support other key architecture initiatives such as sustainability and healthy building, suggesting that practitioners are only just beginning to understand how concepts of equity translate into the physicality of our buildings, spaces, and communities. This study addresses the gap in design guidelines for operationalizing equity in the built environment. Qualitative multiplecase study research investigated four architecture projects designed with an adopted equity lens by using a community-engaged approach. The central research question of this investigation was: How is equity operationalized in the design of the built environment? This inquiry was guided by targeted universalism, an equity framework borne from the discipline of public policy, to identify shared equity goals and associated design strategies that emerged from the community-engaged design processes of each case. The final deliverable of this study is a resource titled Building Equity Standards (BESt) which consists of breakaway tools that can be used singularly or in combination to support operationalizing equity in the design of the built environment, including 1) a Building Equity Goals framework; and 2) corresponding Building Equity Design Guidelines. Upon adoption, BESt is poised to inform the future of architecture praxis and policymaking for advancing equity in the built environment.
