The observational retrospective cohort quantitative study examined the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on student learning. The problem this study addressed was whether students experienced learning loss due to extended or unplanned school closures, breaks, and irregular absenteeism as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous studies had investigated student learning loss due to absenteeism, disciplinary suspensions, scheduled school breaks, weather anomalies, teacher strikes, military conflict, and isolated epidemics; however, the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on education was vastly unknown. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore if student learning loss during the COVID-19 pandemic was evident on the Algebra I and English II end-of-course (EOC) assessments. The review of relevant literature investigated student learning loss due to planned and unplanned absenteeism, preventative measures to decrease student learning loss due to chronic absenteeism, and projected student learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic school shutdowns. This study examined student EOC assessment scaled scores in Algebra I and English II from two years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and compared those scores to EOC assessment scaled scores to the two years during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher used archived data to conduct the quantitative study and utilized Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests along with two-tailed t tests to determine if there were statistically significant differences in student EOC assessment scaled scores. At the conclusion of the study, the researcher determined students who took the EOC assessments prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic had higher scaled scores than students who took the assessments while the pandemic was active. Therefore, the researcher concluded students did suffer learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
