Lack of accessibility to quality reading materials is a contributing factor to illiteracy in our country. Having access to reading materials has been proven to positively benefit children's academics, vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and self-esteem. Access to a wide variety of reading materials is essential for closing the reading achievement gap. The handbook, Access to Books: Facilitating a Culture of Reading at School and at Home for Students in Appendix A of this document was written to support educators, students, and families with obtaining a variety of reading materials. The handbook includes strategies and best practices for obtaining reading materials in the community, at school, and at home which include direct links to organizations.
