The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to examine the experiences of Black/African American educators who have left the profession for entrepreneurship and how their professional experiences in the field of education impacted their approaches to success in entrepreneurship in the United States. The conceptual framework in which the study is grounded, merges Cultural Theory (Hammond, 2017; Hofstede, 1980, 2001; Swedlow et al., 2020) and the Theory of Experience (Dewey 1938/2008b; Roth & Jornet 2014). A review of the literature encompasses the historical context of Black/African American educator experiences in the United States, attrition from the field of education, cultural differences and conflict in the American education system, the historical context of Black/African American entrepreneurship, as well as exploration of the intersection at which education and entrepreneurship exist in the context of this study. This study explores the experiences and transferrable skills of six participants who left the field of education and transitioned to entrepreneurship. The study findings include themes of social and political barriers, relationships for survival, and collectivism as a pathway to and measure of success across cases and professions as well as common transferrable skills.
