Speaking and reading is an important skill that individuals learn along their lives and that is a determinant of success in all areas of personal development. Typical English language learners (ELLs) experience the speaking and reading process in a similar way as their monolingual peers. However, all individuals are equipped with different skills and have different needs. A speech disorder is an impairment of the articulation of speech sounds, fluency, and/or voice. A speech disorder is a condition in which a person has problems creating or forming the speech sounds needed to communicate with others. Speech and language problems may make it hard for children to understand and speak with others or make the sounds of speech. They're common, affecting as many as one in 12 kids and teens in the U.S. Kids with these disorders often have trouble when they learn to read and write, or when they try to be social and make friends. Accurate identification and intervention to ELLs with speech and language problems can reduce the communication failure and help them to acquire the speaking skills needed to success academically. Prevention and early intervention efforts can significantly improve the academic achievement of English language learners. Therefore, this paper provides information about speech sounds focusing on articulation error in ELLs. It includes a handbook that gives information about errors articulation, and symptoms for early identification, fosters strategies for teachers and parents to support English learners with games, strategies, activities that promote auditory discrimination and phonological awareness.
