Arnold Schoenberg's intentions in developing the twelve-tone system were, in his own words, to "replace those structural differentiations provided by the tonal system." For him composition with twelve tones had "no other aim than comprehensibility." The purpose of this study is aimed primarily at an investigation of how formal structure in several twelve-tone works of Schoenberg and Webern is generated by local pitch constructions and linear progression. The selected works are Schoenberg's Suite for Piano, Op. 25, Klavierstuck, Op. 33a, and Three Songs, Op. 48; and Webern's Variations for Piano, Op. 27 and Three Songs, Op. 23. The study of twelve-tone techniques is approached through an analysis of serial applications based on several fundamental principals including segmentation of the set, intervallic/motivic structure and overt thematicism. While it is recognized that simultaneity and linear progression are not the only means of organizing a musical composition, the present study limits the analysis of harmony and twelve-tone techniques primarily to their role in connection with formal articulation.
