Thesis (M.F.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2022.
Includes bibliographical references
We have been living in the city of modernity built up with urbanism universal models for a long time. Rapid urbanization produced uniformity with little thought for lived experience, unifying the city and streets through organizational methodologies and reproductions. Precipitated by time, the unified urban environment becomes familiar and habituations dissolve into monotonous routine life. The fast-paced urban life and mundanity contribute to the disengagement from the streets. The covid pandemic further intensifies the detachment by discouraging lingering in transitionary places and keeping distance. Its impact challenges designers to question the previous organizational strategies and rethink the theory of proxemics, to re-engage and reactivate chance encounters. As the most vital arteries of a city, streets, sidewalks and pathways are valuable because of the fabric of the intricate cross-use that they permit among the city dwellers. To question the incapacity of the existing, explore the unknown and create the unexpected in the intricate triviality, the concept of ambiguity is introduced to the project. As Didier explains, "Architecture for me, or space, needs to have an ambiguity, needs to have the potential to question use and behavior...Doubt takes us to a situation where unexpected things can happen." This thesis seeks to activate ambiguity as the speculative tool to question the traditional strategies of spatial organizations within the urban context. The notion of ambiguity, referring to the quality of being open to multiple interpretations, is activated to explore the unrevealed in everyday cognition and emphasize peripheral senses. Addressing urban disengagement, this project proposes the insertion of uncertainty into familiar city settings to unfold the unexpected routine patterns and the structure we take for granted. Reimagining spatial narratives in the context of Rockefeller Center Concourse, this thesis will address city dwellers' detachment from urban surroundings through cinematic and sensorial interventions. Weaving narrative sequences with filmic transitions and enhanced perceptions, this thesis aims to cut new thresholds into the urban fabric and reframe the way we see and experience the mundane life of the city.
