On average, American children spend seven to eight hours a day playing video games, watching TV, and using a computer (Rubin, 2010). Given children's avid use of technology, an augmented reality (AR) game, a type of video game, was utilized for an environmental education program to explore AR's usefulness as a learning tool. This study used the AR game to educate youth about native and non-native species at a local state park in Syracuse, New York. To better understand the feasibilities and effectiveness of the AR program, a similar non-AR program was used as a study control. The study collected quantitative data including pre-survey questionnaires and post-survey questionnaires that were analyzed using paired t-tests. Qualitative data included participatory observation and interviews. Results showed that both the AR and non-AR programs provided fun and engaging educational experience with the AR program creating a higher engagement level, and better learning outcomes for the youth. Results also show AR games provided youth an incentive to participate in outdoor activities, and learn about conservation issues. AR game programs, which motivate youth and capture their interests, are recommended as an educational tool.
