A genre traditionally associated with spontaneity, inspiration, and imagination, the piano fantasia ca. 1800-1850 was a product of the fundamental changes in European society and culture which demonstrated the Romantic precepts of freedom and individuality. The Romantic piano fantasia rivaled in length and musical weight the other large-scale instrumental works of its time. Virtually every major musical figure of the era, as well as innumerable minor and now-forgotten composers, produced some sort of work for keyboard bearing the designation "fantasia"--encompassing some 1000 pieces. Such trends as an interest in highly intimate modes of expression, improvements in piano construction and the subsequent rise in virtuosity, the prevalence of salon music, and the popularity of folk songs and operatic melodies brought about the development of four distinct classifications of the Romantic piano fantasia: the sonata fantasia, the character fantasia, the salon fantasia, and the opera fantasia.
