Although English is the official language of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), many of Guam's citizens and migrants from FSM fail to master English language skills (e.g., speaking, reading, and writing) and ultimately fail to obtain essential employable skills needed to secure jobs to assist them to rise above the economic poverty line (Anwar & Hushniah, 2016). The purpose of this descriptive case study was to examine the perspectives of college students of FSM descent in Guam in regards to how they believe their English language proficiency affects their employability. The theoretical/conceptual framework the researcher employed during this study was the interpretivist/constructivist framework. The interpretivist/constructivist framework was selected for this study because this theoretical/conceptual framework is an effective approach to capture the experiences of the research subjects in order to better understand their situations (Mayan, 2016). In this study, data was collected via face-to-face 45-minute tape-recorded interviews. The participants of this study consisted of 6 college students of FSM descent attending the Pacific Islands Bible College between the ages of 18 and 30 selected via purposive sampling. The data collected in this study was organized via 4 research questions, 8 interview questions, and 11 emerging themes and analyzed using the Hierarchical Coding Frame process (Elliott, 2018). The results of this study revealed the participants' attitudes which indicated the following: 1) Their high value on obtaining employability skills (Griffiths et al., 2018); 2) Their belief that English language proficiency is important for improving their employability (Blake et al., 2018); 3) Their belief that the successes of their community leaders is associated with them having proficient English skills (Chauvin et al., 2020); and; 4) Their belief that many of their culture's older generation prioritize preserving their native language proficiency over being proficient in English (Cohen & Wickens, 2015).The implications of the results of this study provide the groundwork to develop culturally-relatable methodologies, lesson plans, and study topics with FSM culturally-relatable themes that can be used to teach in ESL classes in the Guam school system at all educational levels (Chang & Zhu, 2020; Cai & Lv, 2019; Zulpan, 2018; Kiang, 2019).
