Procrastination is a problem for many college students in both traditional and self-paced classrooms. The purposes of the present study were to review the existing literature concerning the underlying causes that contribute to procrastination; to develop a questionnaire to rate the severity of procrastination in college students; and finally, to examine the relationship between the severity of procrastination and the following variables: self-esteem, perfectionism, frustration tolerance, anxiety energy level, ability, and the capability to estimate time accurately. The subjects were 120 freshman and sophomore psychology students who attended a university in the Northwest. A 19 item true-false questionnaire was developed for college students to assess their own level of procrastination. A number of more objective measures were also used in order to assess the validity of the Procrastination Questionnaire. The three procrastination measures that correlated moderately well (r = .37 to .48) with the Questionnaire were when students began to study for two course examinations, when they completed their course term paper, and how many term papers they reported turning in late during the academic year. Low, but significant, correlations were found between high Procrastination Questionnaire scores and low self-esteem (Tennessee Self-Concept Scale), low endurance level (Personality Research Form), high anxiety level (Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale), low activity level (Comrey Personality Scale), low perfectionism (Order and Cognitive Structure PRF subscales), and high Mathematics Scholastic Aptitude Test scores. Some evidence was presented that suggested that procrastinators may underestimate the passage of time. Other findings indicated that procrastinators have low achievement motivation, an increased tendency to daydream, and difficulty concentrating on whatever they are doing. They are also more likely to report that one of their parents procrastinated.
