This dissertation is an ethnomusicological study of Cantonese opera, its music and musical processes, important events in its historical development, and the contemporary social organization of the Cantonese opera community in the city of Gwong Jau (Guangzhou) in the People's Republic of China. Specifically, it is an attempt to identify, describe, and explore the nature and workings of certain adaptive strategies and developmental processes that function on various levels in each of the discrete areas examined. The dissertation contains a considerable amount of ethnographic information that would be of interest to researchers in all areas of China studies, including anthropology, sociology, performed literature, and political science. Aspects of the musical system of Cantonese opera are discussed in the first chapter, and the important processes of absorption, maximum utilization, and formulization are identified and examined briefly. The focus of the second chapter is the course of musical and social change in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first part of the chapter examines key changes in the pre-1949 development of this opera form in the major urban centers of the greater Pearl River delta region; the latter part, however, focuses specifically on the post-1949 course of development in the city of Gwong Jau. The processes of absorption and maximum utilization, as well as the adaptive strategy referred to as 'the state of crisis and the call to reform', are seen to have been at work in most instances of musical change and decision making during the past one to two hundred years. The third chapter describes in detail the contemporary (1986-87) Cantonese opera social organization in the city of Gwong Jau. Government organizations; performing troupes; processes and issues in contemporary education, training, and dissemination; the social and professional life of producers; and certain aspects of consumption and patronage are all examined in detail. The final chapter is an analysis of certain key adaptive strategies and developmental processes; the state of crisis, the call to reform, absorption, maximum utilization, and formulization. This is followed by brief concluding reflections on approaches to a study of musical change. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.).
