The purpose of this qualitative research case study was to identify the perceived obstacles in education that students felt they encountered at a rural junior high school 60 miles southwest of Chicago, Illinois. Current literature was reviewed and analyzed suggested there were both economic and social obstacles keeping students from succeeding academically. The data examined was based on a focus group interview. The findings indicate that there are various economic and social obstacles perceived by the students including but not limited to feeling inferior to students not living under the poverty line, concerns about their home lives while in school, and perceptions of their teachers and peers.
