This qualitative study explored rural secondary teachers' perceptions of the influence of social capital on student achievement, considering social capital most notably as a potential solution to overcoming achievement gaps characteristic of rural schools. Using a semi-structured interview protocol, the researcher interviewed 10 rural secondary teachers. Data were analyzed using structural and pattern coding as well as a final thematic analysis. Findings related to the study's primary research question, which focused on participants' perceptions of the influence of social capital on student achievement, included perceptions that social capital influences achievement, social capital cannot account for all achievement gaps, and there are inherent barriers to developing social capital in the rural context. Analysis further uncovered themes relating to the study's three secondary research questions. Implications for practice included consideration by school leaders of intentional development of social capital, social capital development could be a cost-effective starting point for the rural system to close gaps, and teachers must recognize the importance of their respective role in developing relationships with stakeholders for the sake of student outcomes.
