The resurgence of mass immigration after the 1970s has propelled the United States back to its historical norms of being a polyglot nation, causing a renaissance of language diversity. According to the 2019 US Census, nearly 68 million people spoke a language other than English at home. That number almost doubled from 23.1 million (about 1 in 10) in 1980 to almost every 1 in 5 individuals in 2019. With the changes in the composition of society came an inevitable change in today's workforce. Language disparities between native and nonnative English speakers have uncovered challenges in the workplace. Using the Second Language (L2) Acquisition & Socialization Theories, this study explored how native and nonnative English speakers interpreted socialization and engagement in a progressive work environment using the principles of Open-Book Management (OBM) and the Great Game of Businessa [GGOB]. Through existing data, a survey, and interviews, this explanatory mixed-method study found that when leadership embraces and harnesses language diversity, marginalized groups see less disparity in their workplace experiences relative to the acquisition of the second language or the lingua franca English. Results identified themes prevalent in the second language acquisition (SLA) literature, demonstrating that organizations with a strong culture of inclusiveness, engagement and socialization are the modern-day classrooms for second language learning.
