The market for antique picture frames has dramatically evolved over the past twenty-five to thirty years. There was a time when period frames were ignored and neglected. During the 1990s several high profile frame dealers, museum exhibitions, and other such events brought increased public attention to these unappreciated treasures. Antique frames began to sell for unheard of prices at both retail and auction. Today, the market for period frames is continuingly evolving. This thesis will examine the current practices used by antique picture frame dealers when valuing frames, as well as discuss the frame's progression at auction. Through interviews and research, price trends of the market will be analyzed. Furthermore, a review of the role antique frame reproductions play in the current market will be analyzed. A concise overview of the history of picture frames will also be included to show the historical importance of antique picture frames.
