This dissertation establishes a new range of meanings for portraits of women in seventeenth-century France. It traces the development of the religious portrait historie at the French court, and investigates how representational strategies of royal women, which often drew on divine or religious imagery, contributed to the genre's popularity. The women whose portraits form the basis of this investigation are those who, through relation and proximity to the king, occupied positions of significant power and influence at the courts of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The portraits under discussion in this dissertation are reflective of their cultural and historical moments, exemplifying a distinctly French (and Catholic) form of court art. The portrait historie is an artistic tradition wherein the sitter of a portrait adopts the costuming and attributes of an exemplary figure from history, literature, or religion. This dissertation argues that appropriations of saintly identity evolved into a fashionable and aspirational manner of representation for women at the French court during the seventeenth century. The religious portrait historie is an explicitly gendered form of visual rhetoric, which allowed sitters and patrons to harness the image of sacred power.
