Environmental Social Governance (ESG) are a form of modern sustainability reporting and have emerged as and a way to survey the actions and values of a company. Sustainability reporting is increasingly relevant as it dictates financial investment choices, and it allows rhetors to enter financial and ethical decisions that will dictate our environmental future. By exploring how technical documents create narratives and are made of more than objective, unbiased records, the technical communication field is also relevant as the very definition of technical documents may change. This thesis deals exclusively with the environmental sections of ESG reports which focus on ecological topics such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, waste management, and water usage, and it will investigate how the reports use language to convey a story, while they also claim to objectively disclose data. The analysis of four 2021 ESG reports from two industries, Oil & Gas Storage and Biotechnology, resulted in two main conclusions: 1. The reports persuasively frame company actions as progressive 2. Rhetorical patterns, structure, and audience engagement create the report narratives with purpose and persuasion. The literature review explores the exigence of ESG reports, while the methods and discussion section explain use of genre analysis and how the artifacts use rhetorical elements to create a story. The audience of this thesis will gain insight and understand implications for report readers such as technical communicators and practitioners.
