Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2024.
Includes bibliographical references
Public science events (PSEs) are an increasingly popular mode of informal science engagement. The burgeoning research on PSEs suggests a number of important benefits for visitors to these events, including increased scientific knowledge, improved attitudes toward science, and an increased awareness of science in everyday life. However, these events are often studied in isolation, resulting in a body of literature that is lacking in common definitions, frameworks, and goals. Moreover, these events often tend to cater to white, middle class families. This dissertation is comprised of three papers which seek to define the term Public Science Event, contextualize PSEs within the broader informal science education landscape, and investigate issues of equity through the lens of science capital. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
