When engaging with a literary narrative, readers often found themselves emotionally connected to the protagonist, atmospheric settings, and impactful themes. Similarly, architecture possessed the power to immerse individuals physically and emotionally within a space, shaping their experience through materiality, spatial dimensions, and the sequence of spaces. This thesis embarked on an in-depth examination of the intersectionality between narrative and architecture, inspired by the notion that "Architecture is not a story or a sequence of events, but this book sees the conceptual properties, perceptual experience, and the organization of the cultural message as its potential instruments for narration" (Psarra, 2009). Drawing parallels between storytelling and architectural design created the leading compelling question of this thesis: Could architecture effectively tell a story? This study sought to answer this question explored the intersectionality of narrative and architecture. By examining precedents, psychological effects, and optical visual techniques, the research uncovered how architectural elements could be orchestrated to evoke experiences reminiscent of a narrative.The outcome of this study involved the implementation of researched design techniques to generate an architectural narrative experience. The purpose of this experience was not constrained to a specific site; rather, it aimed to explore various techniques within an isolated and controlled environment. The narrative that served as the foundation for this exercise originated from Frank R Stockton's short story, "The Lady, or The Tiger." The central theme of choice and the accompanying responsibility provided a compelling challenge in translating it into an architectural context.To address this challenge, a series of choices was strategically integrated, resembling a maze-like structure. Throughout the intended sequence, the exercise closely emulated key aspects of the original story. Notably, the final decision, representing the titular unknown choice, was left to the user within the spatial environment. This design approach culminated in a user-defined narrative, where individuals crafted their own storyline through the decisions they made.
