Thirty speakers of English as a second language (ESL) rated their degree of accent (DA) on a five point Likert scale. After an intervention in which the participants listened to a recording of a native English speaker, followed by a recording of themselves reading the same passage, they rated DA again. Eighty native English speakers (NE) also rated the participants' DA. Results indicated that the ESL participants rated themselves as having a stronger DA and had better agreement with the NE group following the intervention. These findings indicate the utility of audio recordings in increasing accent self-perception and support the possibility of utilizing them in conjunction with an accent reduction protocol.
