The project is a response to the current Russia-Ukraine war, the biggest and bloodiest armed conflict in Europe since World War II. The war pits against each other two similar peoples who share a long history, and whose cultural identities, historic memories, and familial ties often overlap. In New York City, the shockwaves of the conflict are eroding the fabric of immigrant communities and cause division and alienation.This project attempts to contribute toward re-building New York's Russian - Ukrainian community by creating a space that unites and heals. It imagines an environment where an open dialogue about the causes, circumstances, and implications of the tragedy is encouraged, where experiences of those touched by the war directly and indirectly are brought to light and reflected upon. It allows for room to mourn as well as a place to act. Its purpose is to open the possibility for a peaceful and productive future after the war through facilitating communication and collaborative action.The focus of the research is three-fold: analysis of architecture and art that speaks to historic memory, exploration of needs of people affected by the conflict, and studies of atmospheric conditions in the built environment as a means to evoke an emotional response. Precedent analysis included the work of Peter Zumthor, Maya Lin, Jenny Holzer, Gordon Matta-Clark and others. The program for the community center was developed through the analysis of discussions at "The Reconstruction of Ukraine: Ruination / Representation / Solidarity: A Symposium of Ideas and Strategies" held at the University College of London in September 2022. Peter Zumthor's book "Atmospheres" among other publications was critical in understanding atmosphere as an aesthetic category.The chosen design strategy creates interstitial spaces to mediate between several buildings that are part of the same complex but are different in form and construction type. The buildings are connected through insertion of volumes that "stitch" them together, and through making visual connections by partial dematerialization of the structure. Atmospheric qualities are achieved through material choices and manipulation of light.
