This research study investigated the nature of student leadership opportunities in middle school, high school, and collegiate ensembles. It comprehensively reviewed existing research and proposed potential avenues for future developments. Through a descriptive inquiry, the investigation aimed to ascertain whether similar outcomes are observed across all facets of music education classrooms, including choir, band, and orchestra. The exploratory nature of this study lends itself to no specific hypotheses; however, the findings may have implications for music education classrooms. The research questions are structured based on relevant literature to uncover the skills conferred by occupying a student leadership position. Subjects were secondary and collegiate music directors and students in the Southern United States region. It was designed to determine if teachers utilize student leaders in their secondary ensembles. Questions were asked about the frequency of teachers giving students leadership opportunities and if they find those times efficient for rehearsals. The students were asked if their leadership roles have impacted them and if they feel prepared for their careers because of their roles. The subjects (students and directors) completed the anonymous survey. The findings suggest that music educators should provide more opportunities to develop leadership skills while fostering a love of music.
