This mixed-methods study utilized a concurrent triangulation design to investigate the effect of participating in a mindfulness-based curriculum within an elementary school counseling small-group on perceived stress levels, and to explore the experiences of children participating in the curriculum. In order to measure the dependent variable of perceived stress-levels, participants received the Perceived Stress Scale for Children (PSS-C) as a pre- and post-test measure to evaluate their overall perceived stress-levels before and after participation in the study. Qualitative data was collected through journal prompts addressing participant experiences about being members in this group. Data analysis revealed that participation in a mindfulness curriculum within an elementary school counseling small-group setting has the potential to decrease stress and increase self-regulation skills, relaxation and attention within children. The results, implications and recommendations uncovered in this study can support school counselors looking to begin integrating mindfulness-based interventions with their students.
