This capstone project explored various sources to answer the question of whether direct spelling instruction has an impact on spelling proficiency. The capstone project focused on a diverse second-grade classroom in an urban school district that does not partake in spelling practices. The students were the participants and were placed in three differentiated spelling groups based on their Benchmark Education Quick Spelling Assessment (Hasbrouck, 2022) results. Each Monday during the three weeks, all students were given a pre-assessment, and each Friday, a post-assessment was given. The tests were collected, and data was analyzed. The students were introduced to the weekly spelling pattern by their classroom teacher each week during their English Language Arts period. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the students practiced the sounding out strategy using a created Elkonin box worksheet activity, and on Thursdays, the students practiced using an online letter tile program, Really Great Reading Letter Tile Freeplay (Really Great Reading Company, n.d.-b). This capstone project aimed to influence the administration to adopt spelling as a required part of the curriculum within the school environment and positively affect students' spelling proficiency.
