This study examines the repetitive nature of nursery rhymes and its effect on child language development within an interactive learning model. A comprehensive review of previous research on repetition and imitation in parent-child communication and the facilitative effect of this on child language acquisition is conducted. The major hypothesis of this study is that nursery rhymes that exhibit repetitions of linguistic structures can potentially facilitate child language development. Nursery rhymes are specifically examined for types of uniform repetitions and the frequency of these occurrences. Uniformities are descriptively analyzed in grammatical terms. A high degree of uniform structures are found occurring in high frequencies. In order to investigate the potential value of repetitive nursery rhymes toward child language facilitation, the differential preference of children toward repetitive versus nonrepetitive nursery rhymes is examined in a pilot study. The results indicate that children have a significant preference for repetitive nursery rhymes.
