The word 'quality' in the phrase 'quality early childhood education' (ECE) is notoriously difficult to define. There is no doubt it's important to have enforceable state-level standards in ECE, so consumers can have some assurance their children are being provided a safe and nurturing environment which fosters emotional, intellectual, physical, and social development. Unfortunately, in many instances the regulatory atmosphere born of these good intentions has become heavy-handed, stifling creativity, and rewarding those whose only goal is to comply with a static set of often outdated rules. Conversely, research has shown that methods of providing ever-better quality education to preschool children are likely to flourish in a responsive regulatory atmosphere that rewards innovation, and which seeks input from various stakeholders, such as parents, teachers, and young children.However, with respect to gaining an understanding of the ECE preferences or interests of young children, researchers have found difficulty in obtaining reliable data. Verbal interviews necessarily rely on subjects whose facility with language is at an early stage of development.The relatively new methodology known as Photo Elicitation Interview (PEI) research offers exciting opportunities for hearing the authentic voices of young children, potentially allowing the researcher to largely 'bypass' complications created by 'wordheavy' interactions.Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the preferences of end-state users of ECE: parents, teachers, and young children. The study does this by attempting to discover those preferences in the selection and ranking of photos using a photo elicitation interview (PEI) methodology. My photo elicitation research efforts were driven by the following primary research questions:1. What are the preferences of preschool age children in the ECE setting?2. What are the preferences of parents in the ECE setting?3. What are the preferences of teachers in the ECE setting?4. How do the preferences of these various groups compare?The research was conducted at The Discovery Center preschool in Ann Arbor, Michigan in short one-on-one PEI sessions involving the researcher and 14 children, 12 parents, and 10 teachers. Nearly identical photo sets were provided to the participants, who were asked to rank the photos by preference and provide limited verbal feedback pertaining to particular photo selections.The children demonstrated a pattern of selecting a small group of pictures as their favorites, and the adults likewise selected certain photos over others to an important degree. The findings, with their interesting groupings, suggest that young children are interested in large motor activities involving indoor and outdoor movement and play. Adults, parents and teachers alike, selected photos which suggest they are interested in affirming small group interactions, whether involving an adult or not.Additional PEI research should be done to 'break down' these photo subject preferences, to determine replicability and the best methods for extrapolating additional meaning from their choices. Perhaps the best means of doing so would be to expand the size of the participant pool and to consider the inclusion of additional preschools within the parameters of such a study. Initial care should be taken to sample a largely homogenous group of parents, teachers, and young children so that a baseline of interests across a similar pool of participants can be established. Once this is done, this PEI study design (or similar PEI study designs) can be used for comparative purposes to explore differences in results between children from different social, economic, cultural, religious, minority backgrounds, etc.Indeed, PEI research with young children is a methodology and area of research offering many new opportunities (and options for study design), and it is hoped that an expanded use of PEI in ECE research will help regulators and ECE professionals take account of the perspectives of young children and other stakeholders in crafting truly high-quality ECE policy.
