Previous research has examined the influence of parental attachment on college student adjustment and separately, the influence of perceived stress on adjustment. Very few, if any, have examined the relationship and interactions of parental attachment, perceived stress, and college adjustment simultaneously. The purpose of the current study was to examine level of parental attachment, perceived stress, and college adjustment to determine if there were any significant relationships. A second goal was to determine if the interaction between parental attachment and perceived stress had an effect on level of college adjustment. Participants in this correlational study consisted of 80 first-year college students from universities across the United States. Participants were recruited through the researcher's personal and professional network using snowball and convenience sampling. A five part survey included sections on demographics, perceived level of stress, college adjustment, and attachment to both mother and father. The inventories were administered anonymously using an online survey format. Research identified relationships between the study variables and background variables that predicted successful college adjustment. No relationship was found between parental attachment and perceived stress. Attachment to father was negatively correlated to college adjustment indicating that having a secure attachment to father promotes positive adjustment. Perceived stress was highly negatively correlated with college adjustment indicating that students with low levels of perceived stress were more likely to report higher levels of college adjustment. Finally, it was found that the interaction between perceived stress and maternal attachment significantly predicts levels of college adjustment. Implications for clinical practice and ideas for further research are explored.
