This project examines the form of the freestanding Roman arch in its historical, cultural, and ideological contexts from its inception to the present. Paying particular attention to those arches within the city of Rome itself, this paper traces the history of freestanding arches erected in the capital from the time of their construction to the time of their (in most cases) destruction and disappearance. By looking at the lives of these arches beyond the ancient period this dissertation will show that monuments act as palimpsests, accumulating meaning with each successive historical generation. In particular, arches have evolved to become a universal symbol of Imperial Triumph, an identity which is both removed from their complex ancient uses, and problematic in the 21st century. This research uses archaeological records, primary sources, written and visual representations, historiographical accounts, and comparative examples to demonstrate the layers of identity on Roman arches and the manner in which these monumental palimpsests accumulated, and manifested over the course of two millennia. By looking at Roman arches, a relatively ubiquitous and recognizable form, this study will demonstrate the complexities and contradictions inherent in even the most familiar and ancient monuments.
