We live in a world where we are constantly moving. Especially in New York City, we are always on the go. When first starting on my journey of becoming an art therapist, I did not expect to lose myself as an artist during this journey. Little information exists on how or why this happens in the field of art therapy. Despite the field of art therapy being focused on art making, there is little time for art therapists to create art for themselves. This arts-based study, along with a questionnaire sent to graduate art therapy students and artists in the community, explores the topic of how one can lose an artist's identity while training to become an art therapist, and charts a path for how one might find their way back to it. This study, inspired by heuristic self-inquiry, explores the experiences of art therapists and artists in the community through a series of questions that were presented in a questionnaire filled out by participants, while also including the researcher's personal experiences of losing and rediscovering the artist self, supported by a series of paintings that were completed in a self-made studio set up in the researcher's apartment.
