Since its inception in sixteenth-century Germany, the Faust legend has become one of the most significant, defining narratives of Western civilization. Faust became a source of obsessive fascination for nineteenth-century composers including Hector Berlioz, Robert Schumann, and Charles Gounod. Although some Faust-themed operas appeared in the first half of the twentieth century, notably Ferruccio Busoni's Doktor Faust (1916-24) and Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress (1947-51), Faust's resurgence as an operatic subject in the latter decades of the twentieth century is remarkable. With over ten Faust operas composed and performed in both Europe and North America since the late 1960s, the Faust story is one of the most widely recurring themes in recent opera. Through an in-depth study of important recurring themes and tendencies among ten operas, this dissertation examines the ways in which these operas reassert the relevance of the Faust legend for our times and engage with some of the central aesthetic, philosophical, and ethical issues of recent decades. Chapter 1, "The Evolution of Faust," presents an overview of previous literary and musical adaptations of the Faust legend while discussing previous scholarship on Faust in music. Chapter 2, "Anti-Fausts," focuses on four postmodern operas that aim to overthrow any noble or heroic qualities previously associated with Faust: Pascal Dusapin's Faustus, the Last Night (2003-04), Konrad Boehmer's Doktor Faustus (1980-83), Wolfgang Rihm's Faust und Yorick (1976), and Philippe Fenelon's Faust (2007). Chapter 3, "Faustian Ambivalence," discusses particularly complex and ambiguous characterizations of Faust in three recent operas: John Adams's Doctor Atomic (2005), Luca Lombardi's Faust, un travestimento (1986-1991), and Alfred Schnittke's Historia von D. Johann Fausten (1983-1994). Chapter 4, "Faust as Composer / The Composer as Faust," focuses on three operatic portrayals of Faust that resonate with each composer's situation as an artist active at the end of the twentieth century. In addition Lombardi's opera, this chapter discusses Henri Pousseur's Votre Faust (1960-68) and Giacomo Manzoni's Doktor Faustus (1982-88). Chapter 5, "Postmodern Evil," focuses on the most significant shared tendencies in recent operatic depictions of Mephistopheles. This chapter discusses the Faust operas by Schnittke, Lombardi, Manzoni, Dusapin and Eotvos.
