Although the theatre has functioned since the time of the Greeks, most theories about theatre treat it as if this aesthetic phenomenon were written dramatic texts only. In so doing, these speculations ignore a major component: the performance in which the simultaneous presence of sight and sound embodies and produces the written text as speech and action within a defined space. The emergence of a semiotic consciousness in the recent history of critical theory has begun to modify this limitation in analysis. The era of modern semiotics begins with the publications of Ferdinand de Saussure's and Charles Sanders Peirce's theories. The Prague School was among the first to examine elements in theatre from a semiotic standpoint. They called attention to the interpenetration of the visual and the auditory in theatre. This dissertation attempts to extend this analysis further, using a compound or integrated theoretical structure influenced by theories of semiotics. The first part of this dissertation maps out a theory of signs: the theoretical foundations of semiotics, as well as analyses of a sign's substance, qualifying property, and possible classifications. The second part deals specifically with signs in theatre. It first examines the interactions of various subsets of signs in theatrical performances in general, and the interactive relations between visual image and word during a performance in particular. Using a theoretical model that is derived from Roland Barthes' idea of the functions of relay and anchorage, this dissertation then provides detailed discussions of moments from four plays: A Man's A Man by Bertolt Brecht, Rockaby by Samuel Beckett, Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello, and a Chinese Opera, Sou-Ling-Nang. The applications show how the manipulation of the interactions of image and word will yield very different effects. Finally, this dissertation concludes with a summary of the merits of a semiotic reading of a performance as well as its limitations, particularly in the area of audience-reception analysis, and proposes a phenomenological approach of semiotics as a supplement to theatre semiotics in dealing with the problem of reception.
