Early childhood teachers' perceptions of adult facilitation for children with special needs within dramatic play areas were examined. Research questions focused on perceptions of the role of the dramatic play areas in assisting them as they engage children with special needs in play, how teachers engage in play with children with special needs, frequency of teacher-led, facilitated play, and role of facilitation to improving social skills in children with special needs. A total of 24 early childhood teachers from four early childhood centers were interviewed using a methodology that focused on teacher perceptions of dramatic play engagement of children with special needs and their social skill development. Qualitative data analyses revealed that early childhood teachers perceived that the dramatic play area assisted them in play engagement, the importance of using a variety of strategies in play engagement, and the need to assist the child in play to increase play engagement and more complex play. All 24 teachers reported that they participated in teacher-led dramatic play at some point throughout the school day. Implications of these findings for expanding dramatic play engagement opportunities in educational environments were discussed.
