As K-12 classical education grows in the United States, many schools face pressure to incorporate computer science into their curriculum, particularly in classical high schools. Career-oriented "STEM" education and computer programming classes are typically perceived to be at odds with the principles of classical education. However, students today face many perils from our technology-driven society for which a typical classical curriculum may not prepare them. This paper examines the landscape of technology education in both classical and mainstream schools, surveys a selection of writers on the history and philosophy behind technology and modern media, and proposes an outline for a classical approach to a liberating technology education appropriate for high school students that can fit within a classical curriculum. As part of the philosophical survey, the writings of Jacques Ellul, Simone Weil, and Marshall McLuhan are placed into conversation.
