The present educational scenario in India and the United States places an over emphasis on exams or tests. The mainstream schooling system in India disregards the students' individual needs, abilities, and talents. My experience of schooling in a mainstream school in India was marked by a sense of monotony, boredom, disengagement, and drudgery. The search for a pedagogical site where the students' experiences differ from mine motivates this research. During the pilot studies I conducted in India, in 2014, I worked with a non-profit organization called Grammangal. I found Grammangal's school in Pune, the Learning Home as a pedagogical site, recognizes, respects, nurtures, and celebrates every child. In contrast with mainstream schools, the Learning Home is a place of learning where education is conceived of as a life-long pursuit rather than reproduction of standardized content. This dissertation attempts to examine the experiences of individuals at this pedagogical site in order to understand the curriculum, place, and design at the Learning Home. By examining the experiences of the educators, facilitators, and children, I hoped to understand what constitutes their experience of the Learning Home, and how this understanding might inform other pedagogical settings.

I visited India in 2015 to conduct my ethnographic case-study of the Learning Home. My primary sources of data are fieldwork observations, interviews, and analysis of Grammangal documents. I used a detailed and intensive data analytical approach to examine the participants' lived experiences. From the analysis of my data, I came to the conclusion that the most dominant aspects of my participants' experiences of the Learning Home are engaged relationships and a sense of personal growth. Based on these findings I propose the curriculum at the Learning Home can be understood as engaged curriculum.

The central finding of this study suggests the curricular experiences of educators, facilitators, and children are enriching and empowering when curriculum is understood as a creative endeavor. Additionally, engaged curriculum, or curriculum designed as a response to the individuals and the pedagogical site, creates a meaningful experience for the children and facilitators. I argue that facilitators or teachers and children or students can recognize and respond to the curricular potential of objects, place, people, and entities around them when they are empowered by creative agency.
