This thesis discusses the images of masculine women in the print media in 1920s -- 1940s China. The selected images include cartoons and photos, most of which were found in influential pictorials, such as The Young Companions [special characters omitted], the Pei-Yang Pictorial News [special characters omitted], the Eastern Times Picture Supplement [special characters omitted], China Sketch [special characters omitted] ... The types of masculine women showed in the journals were diverse: the most popular topic was women soldiers, but there were also fanatic fashionable ladies, athletes and cross-dressing opera actresses. By looking into the pictorial details and narrative, gazing mechanism and the cultural context, this thesis tries to figure out the special characteristics of these women's images and explains the images from a gender-based prospective. Emphases are given to 1) the regulation of the body of women and the production and circulation of the images of masculine women; 2) Women's subjectivity under double exploitations: men's erotic gazing and the nationalist discourse, and 3) the connection of the images of masculine women in late Qing, republican China and the People's Republic of China.

The introductory chapter will explain the value of this dissertation's topic, a literature review as well as a discussion of the key concepts. In the second chapter, the author discusses the direct predecessor of the images of masculine women in 1920s -- 1940s, i.e. the images of masculine women published in late Qing pictorials. The third chapter presents the social background of the images of masculine women, including the development of pictorials, the flourishing circulation of images, as well as the different cultural characteristics of the republican Chinese cities mentioned. The fourth chapter discusses the images of masculine women in the nationalist discourse and men's needs/anxiety; women's subjectivity is also an important issue in this chapter. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.
