Throughout the history of the United States Marine Corps, senior leadership has used many different styles to lead Marines. Strong leadership practices play a vital role in the success in the Marine Corps. It builds esprit de corps and inspires Marines to do their best. However, an increasing pattern of misconduct in the Marine Corps has the potential to undermine the Corps' rules-based ethics training which emphasizes conduct and character. This study addressed the impact a leadership model program---aggressive ethics training designed to influence the level of misconduct--- would have on the United States Marine Corps. Through open-ended and semi-structured interviews, the study relied on the participants' common experiences. The 100 Marines were recruited using an in-depth small sampling of the Headquarters Marine Corps recall roster. By interviewing 100 U.S. Marines from the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia, this study helped gain a deeper understanding of the participants' perceptions of whether such training can decrease instances of misconduct. The study revealed whether misconduct within the Marine Corps could be reduced by the development of a model leadership program. The Marines have a traditionally high standard for behavior. It was possible that more mandatory education and training will make Marines less likely to engage in inappropriate behavior. The study also examined how a structured leadership model can help produce the best Marines by providing role models who display good character. An increase in episodes of misconduct has pushed the Marine Corps to underscore the rules-based ethics training, which emphasizes conduct, but a leadership model that includes counseling, coaching, and mentoring---coupled with mandatory training---could also have an impact.

The study used a purposeful sampling to select 100 United States Marines, which consisted of 60 junior enlisted Marines, 20 Staff noncommissioned officers, and 20 officers to participate in the study. To ensure construct validity and to increase the study's reliability, the researcher followed the principle of converging evidence by creating a case study database that included case study notes, case study documents, and transcribed interviews, and a narrative.
