In response to increases in chronic illnesses, associated medical costs, and health insurance premiums, many employers have adopted wellness programs. However, despite the health and financial benefits of wellness program utilization, employee participation in the programs remains low. The purpose of this study was to further understand how employees' perceptions of their own health issues related to their utilization or non-utilization of a workplace wellness program. The Health Belief Model provided the theoretical foundation for this study because it has been used extensively to understand why individuals engage or refrain from engagement in preventative health behaviors. This qualitative multiple case study included 12 employees of the University of Central Florida who worked within the Student Development and Enrollment Services division. The multiple cases were composed of one group of wellness program utilizers, and one group of wellness program non-utilizers. Each of the employees was asked some or all of 14 field-tested semi-structured interview questions. Interview responses were tape-recorded and transcribed, and the interview transcripts were uploaded into NVivo qualitative software for inductive coding and thematic analysis. The themes from each case were explored to understand how similarities and differences in the case study participants' perceptions of their own health issues affected their health-seeking behaviors. Study findings revealed employees who utilized the workplace wellness program believed they were susceptible to health risks, and therefore adopted lifestyles that included regular physical fitness and healthy diets. Employees who did not utilize the workplace wellness program did not identify susceptibility to any specific health risks, did not believe participation in the workplace wellness program was a necessary means for physical activity, and identified barriers that significantly impeded their participation in the program. This study found that non-participating employees perceived greater barriers than benefits to participation in the wellness program. Future recommendations are to provide employees with opportunities to identify health risks, receive education about the health risks, and promote the wellness program resources that can mitigate or prevent identified health risks. Additional research is recommended to evaluate non-participating employees' perceptions regarding the value of engagement in the workplace wellness program against perceived barriers to participation.
